Description

Philander Begay Navajo Cuff

Discover an extraordinary example of contemporary Navajo jewelry with this impressive Philander Begay Navajo cuff bracelet. Created by master Navajo silversmith Philander Bryan Begay, this substantial cuff combines sterling silver craftsmanship with turquoise and jet inlay and an expressive figurative design that transforms the bracelet into a wearable work of art.

Philander Begay is a Navajo artist known for his distinctive approach to silverwork, sculptural forms, inlay, and figurative storytelling. His jewelry often incorporates multiple materials and techniques to create pieces that are meant to be appreciated from more than one angle. This cuff is an especially striking example, with its detailed design extending inside and outside the bracelet.

The cuff measures approximately 1 1/2″ wide across the top, giving it a bold and substantial presence on the wrist. Its sculptural construction makes it more than a traditional silver cuff, while the combination of turquoise and jet introduces contrasting natural colors and textures throughout the design.

The bracelet incorporates turquoise and jet inlay, two materials strongly associated with Southwestern and Native American jewelry traditions. The vibrant turquoise provides natural color variation and visual depth, while the dark jet creates a dramatic contrast against the silver and turquoise.

The cuff weighs approximately 127.00 grams, giving it considerable weight and presence. The substantial sterling silver construction makes this a statement piece intended to be noticed, while the intricate figurative design provides details to discover when viewed up close.

The bracelet is hallmarked “PBB .925,” identifying the maker’s mark associated with Philander Begay and the sterling silver purity. The .925 designation indicates sterling silver containing 92.5% pure silver.

Philander Bryan Begay, a Navajo artist active since at least the 2000s, is recognized for working in tufa casting, silver, gold, channel inlay, inside stamping, and sculptural forms. His body of work includes distinctive figurative and animal-inspired designs, including kachina-related forms, tortoise designs, frog inlay, bracelets, and rings.

Begay’s work is particularly interesting for collectors because of its combination of traditional Navajo jewelry techniques with highly individual sculptural and storytelling elements. His pieces can function as both wearable jewelry and small-scale works of art.

This cuff measures approximately 2 1/2″ across the inside, with a 1 1/8″ cuff opening. Due to its substantial construction and specific dimensions, the measurements should be considered carefully when determining fit. The cuff’s approximately 1 1/2″ top width also gives it a commanding appearance when worn.

The figurative storytelling incorporated into this piece gives the cuff a sense of movement and narrative. Rather than presenting a simple repeating pattern, the design rewards closer examination and reflects Begay’s artistic approach to transforming traditional jewelry materials into sculptural forms.

The combination of sterling silver, turquoise, jet, sculptural design, and detailed inlay makes this cuff an excellent choice for a serious collector of Native American jewelry or contemporary Southwestern art jewelry. It can be worn as a statement piece or displayed as part of a collection of important Navajo silverwork.

This is a particularly substantial example of Philander Begay’s work, both physically and artistically. At 127 grams, the cuff has significant presence, while its detailed interior and exterior construction demonstrates the level of attention given to the piece beyond its outward appearance.

Whether you’re a collector of Philander Begay jewelry, Navajo silverwork, turquoise jewelry, or contemporary Native American art, this cuff offers a compelling combination of craftsmanship, materials, and storytelling.
