This magnificent Silver Didrachm from Calabria, Taras, dates back to c. 332-302 BC, a period rich with Greek influence in Southern Italy. The obverse features a striking depiction of a horseman, a symbol of strength, power, and nobility in ancient Tarentine culture. The level of detail on the horseman is particularly noteworthy, showcasing the skill of the engravers of this era.
On the reverse, we find the city’s namesake, the youthful figure of Taras, son of Poseidon, riding a dolphin. This image is iconic, representing the mythological founding of the city of Taras (modern-day Taranto) and its strong connection to the sea. The dolphin symbolizes the city’s maritime strength and prosperity, while Taras’ commanding pose reflects the importance of the legendary hero.
